Firkin 5 Mile Run
5M
Although there is a closing date of May 17th, in 2018 the race opened on Feb 14th and it was full by Mar 1st. "The start is in front of the iconic tower of the Hook Norton Brewery from where runners proceed down Brewery Lane, past The Pear Tree pub and up a gentle hill towards The Sun Inn. A right turn down steep Bell Hill, then bear right, up a small incline then level out along Burycroft Road. At the end of this road which is about the 1M point, a staggered crossing and the route then goes off road to the most challenging part of the circuit, up a steep and rough track, with magnificent views of the brewery and village to your right. The route then climbs up Oatley Hill, before again leveling out, and getting to the halfway, water and first aid post. After crossing a field there is a flat road section of a mile or so, before a nice downhill section, then a right turn and it’s off road again for a mile, another road crossing and it’s the homeward straight, across several flat grass fields, with the Brewery coming back into view. Across the field at the rear of the brewery, circumnavigating the horses and hurdling over any sleeping goats, and you’re at the bar!" "The route is quite challenging, some nice fast road sections at the beginning and in the middle, and some hilly off road sections too. But some outstanding views and a beer at the end to refresh you" "Medal, goody bag and a free drink."

The start will be on South Parks Road, which is a 5 minute walk from the Event Village. The route takes you on to Oxford High Street and round the back roads of many of Oxford's historic colleges. "The 11K starts at about 1045." Here are my notes from when I did it in 2010: 'This is a gorgeous run that takes place around Houghton which is a village in the Test valley that is about halfway between Salisbury and Winchester. It's mainly off-road: it starts with a long gentle climb along a rutted cart track; then down along rough tarmac; uses a footbridge to bypass a ford (or you can run through!); then there is a narrow footpath that climbs gently up through a wood (where you are warned to watch out for tree roots). The rest of the course is either flat or downhill, again on rough tarmac, on wide bridleways/cart-tracks or on grassy footpaths through fields where there are two stiles. The route also passes a bluebell wood, a magnificently preserved disused railway station and several bridges across the River Test.' "Medal." Gaddesden Gallop
10K, 5K
"Venue is the Village Sports Ground." "A fantastic cross country 10K and 5K run across the Hertfordshire countryside." Here's a useful description of the 2013 Gaddesden Gallop 10K that appeared in a newsletter of the Tring Running Club - I don't know whether the details are still appropriate: 'The start and finish is in Little Gaddesden and the route goes down the Golden Valley behind Ashridge house, up onto the ridge behind Frithsden, down the roman road track to Nettleden before climbing up the path on the other side of the valley to the monastery. There is then a couple of kilometres on a flat track to Hudnall before turning back across rutted fields to Little Gaddesden. So if you are familiar with the Boundary Trail or the Dunstable 20,  you would know a lot of this route. Not that you needed to know it as the marking and marshals were very good, even holding open the kissing gates as we went round. It was very well organised and has nice and relaxed feel.'

UKA_2019-38066
This is one of a series held at Charlton-on-Otmoor, Bletchingdon, Combe, Combe and Kidlington. There is a considerable discount if you enter the Series and members of some clubs get an even bigger discount if they instead enter through their club. "No entries on the night until Race 3 (availability to be determined)." "Runners will be issued with just one number which is to be used for all races. If you enter in advance, your number will be issued at the first race or held for subsequent collection at a later race." "Chip timing." "Spot prizes." "You get a memento if you enter the Series." "Venue of the Charlton-on-Otmoor race is the Recreation Ground, High Street." This race will "use the 5.2M course" adopted in a hurry in 2018 - it's two laps of the initial circle rather than a figure-of-eight - the figure-of-eight course was 4.0955M long.

"Leaving from the grand Sudeley Castle in the heart of the Cotswold Hills and set in 1200 acres of estate land, this won’t be a walk in the park. Sitting nicely down in the bottom of a valley, the only way is up. It’ll be worth it though as the surrounding area is everything you’d expect to see from rural middle England. With technical single track, wooded trails and some locally famous national routes on the Cotswold Way, Gloucestershire Way and the Winchcombe Way. The course won’t allow you to switch off for a second, but you’ll be thankful for that as it’ll allow you to take in your surroundings which you won’t want to miss.""Medal, bottle of Maverick Trail Ale." I've not seen a postal entry form yet. In previous years, you collected your race number on the day. "Venue is the Spiceball Leisure Centre." The course is a shaped like a letter P, the out and back bit being about 5M long. This out and back bit starts along narrow paths in Spiceball Park. It continues on a footpath that accompanies the A423. The first hill is alongside this main road at about 1.25M. Just after 2M, the course leaves the main road and ventures into the countryside visiting the villages of Little Bourton, Great Bourton and Cropredy. At 5M, the circular 5M bit  f the P starts. Here there is a short hill and at 6M there is a longer hill. At the top, you reach a village called Claydon. In my opinion, the nicest part of the course is between 6.5M and 8M: so peaceful on a quiet, narrow lane that crosses the Oxford Canal (between Claydon and Appletree). Unfortunately, this tranquillity is shattered by a significant hill at 8M (and in the future by being only 1K from 225 mph trains on the HS2 railway line). Just after the 10M marker, you complete the circular bit of the course. Just after 11M you meet the last hill which is on the approach to Great Bourton. You know it's coming as you went down it on the way out! "Memento." The race has been renamed "Geoff Smith's Banbury 15". Geoff Smith, a former chairman of Banbury Harriers, died in May 2015. "Smithy was the spearhead of The Banbury Fifteen road-race". 1M and 2.5M Paul Bithell Memorial fun runs as well (at 1040).

Goring 10K
10K
UKA_2018-32049
"Collect race number and chip on the day." "We sold out in advance in 2016." The Goring 10K takes place on undulating rural lanes and footpaths but there are also three or four hills. The race starts at the bottom of a hill outside Goring's Fire Station. The hill climbs from 60m to 95m and lasts about 1K. The race then uses country lanes, 1.5K of the Ridgeway through South Stoke, more country lanes to re-visit the highest point of the course about 1.5K from the end. So you then go down the 1K hill you did at the start but this is then followed by a few meanderings around a housing estate before finishing on a field behind the School. Tip: if you're wishing to finish fast but are tired at the end of the race, these meanderings can be a bit confusing. So the last 0.5K are worth checking out when you are warming up  - if you wish to do this, have a look at the course map. A small section of the route is the same as that of the Woodcote 10K.

A map of the  route shows the course varying from about 85m to 113m. When I ran it in 2010 I found a long gentle incline lasting from 3.5K to 5K and another short one at 5.5K. But the cruel bit was at the end: there was a steep hill from 9K to 9.5K. Needless to say this is where the official photographer was positioned to catch all the grimaces!

"Approximately 6 mile multi terrain race with large parts on trails through the scenic but hilly National Trust grounds of Cliveden. This event has been taking place successfully for over 30 years."

Woodcote 10K

UKA_2019-36324
"Collect race number and chip on the day." Like 2018 the race is starting at 1015. My notes from when I did this in 2011 say 'This 10K is on country lanes in the Chilterns. It starts from the village green in Woodcote, goes down hill along lanes through woods to Goring. At 5K, it goes up the killer hill that is outside Goring's Fire Station, the same hill that is used for the start of the Goring 10K. There is then a 1K respite but this is followed by a long climb back to Woodcote. Elsewhere on the web, someone says it's a "tough road race, 5K downhill followed by 5K uphill" and that describes it very well.' "K markers." "Chip timing." "Medal." Previously this race was known as the 'Goring, Woodcote and District Lions 10K'.

Gibbet Hangover
10M, 5.5M
"The start is at the Crown and Garter Pub, Great Common Road, Inkpen Common." "The Hangover is a 10 mile(ish) wander around the beautiful countryside of Inkpen and Combe. The route takes in Walbury Hill, Combe Gibbet, and the  Test Way, with a good mix of road and off-road (footpaths and bridleways), and a couple of decent climbs. We also have a shorter route of 5 miles or so for anybody who doesn't fancy the full distance. The finish is also at the Crown and Garter Pub, with a drink or two in the pub afterwards. Note that The Hangover is a casual get together, not a formal race event, so there is no entry fee, and the only prize is a pint for the first finisher." However, in 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014 the organisers produced a set of results.

"Venue is the Pilot Inn, Sellars Road." Although there is a closing date of Dec 20th, be aware that "entry is restricted to 60 pre-entries". However runbritain says that there is a race limit of 80 and that entries on the day are permitted. "A predominately flat race around country lanes." runbritain says it's "out and back". There is a similar event on Dec 27th.
